Gudi Padwa – The Hindu New Year

Gudi Padwa is the Hindu festival which is celebrated on the first day of Chaitra month. It is celebrated as the New Year as per the Hindu calendar. The name is in Marathi language and has Sanskrit origin of the word Pratipada which means for the first day of a lunar month or first day after new moon day. It is hoisted as an occasion associated with the third day of Diwali called Balipratipada (another celebration during the end of harvesting season).

It is a Marathi festival where a stick is used adorned with yellow or green cloth with brocade tied at the top of the bamboo. Along with the cloth, a copper or silver sugar crystals or gaathi with neem leaves, twig of mango leaves, and red flower’s garland is used to tie. The created structure is called Gudhi which is hoisted out the house, window or terrace for people to see it.

The reason for celebrating this festival is that it is considered as a symbol of victory where Maratha forces led by Chhatrapati Shivaji won the battle. Along with this, it also symbolizes the victory of king Shalivahana who fought with Sakas. There are several mythological connections that link with this festival.
