India Will Be Celebrating Its 68th Independence Day

68th-Independence-Day

British Rule in India ended in the midnight of 15th August, 1947 when our first Prime Minister Shri Jawaharlal Nehru declared India free and delivered a wonderful speech addressing the people of the country. This year, India will be celebrating the 68th anniversary of that event.

Every year, India celebrates its Independence Day as a national holiday. The celebration begins when the country’s Prime Minister hoists the tricolored national flag; the event takes place at the historic Lal Kila or the Red Fort in New Delhi, India’s national capital. The flag hoisting takes place amid firing of as many as 21 gunshots; the gun salute is offered to show respect to the occasion and the country.

The flag hoisting event is followed by a speech by the Prime Minister; the speech is delivered addressing to the entire nation from Kashmir to Kanyakumarika. People living in every corner of the country can listen to the speech as it is nationally broadcasted from Red Fort through Doordarshan and All India Radio.

The actual celebration, however, begins on the 14th of August i.e. on the eve of the Independence Day. Every year, on 14th August, the President of India delivers a speech addressing the nation from the Rashtrapati Bhavan, or the President’s Official Home. This speech also gets telecasted all across the country via Doordarshan and even gets broadcasted on All India Radio.

On 15th August, the event is followed by a number of other activities like March Past, signing of the country’s national anthem “Jana Gana Mana” and so on.

Other than this national celebration every state also holds its own official celebration. Those events also start with flag hoisting. Several schools and colleges also organize flat hoisting programmes on the Independence Day.
