Tik tok ban – Good or Bad?

In the wake of ongoing stand-off along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh with Chinese PLA (People Liberation Army), the Narendra Modi-led government put a ban on 59 apps including TikTok and WeChat. This marks the largest sweep against the Chinese technology companies. These measures have been undertaken since there is credible information that these apps are engaged in activities which are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order. The decision has been taken in a bid to safeguard the interests of crores of Indian mobile users. “There have been raging concerns on aspects relating to data security and safeguarding the privacy of 130 crore Indians. It has been noted recently that such concerns also pose a threat to sovereignty and security of our country,” said the government.

Tik Tok was one of the chinese app which got banned with 58 others. Tiktok had gained immense popularity among Indian audiences. There were millions of users on tik tok putting out their content. Content creators like Awez Darbar, Nagma Mirajkar, Tanzeel Khan, Aashna Hegde, Team 07, etc gained popularity through Tik Tok and now they have such immense fan following on other social media channels as well like Instagram.

When the app got banned, there was an opportunity for Indian apps to gain popularity. There were many Indian apps introduced like Mitron, Triller, Josh, Moj, MX takatak, Vigo Video, etc. People were earlier not very happy with the ban of tik tok but eventually they started making their accounts on the alternate apps. Then Instagram came up with a feature called ‘Reels’. This was a replica of tiktok but on Instagram itself. People started using that and enjoyed this feature a lot. They started using it to showcase their talent and content that they used to put on tiktok. Many creators were signed for music videos by seeing their talent and following. Overall, Tiktok ban was fruitful to Indians since people started using Made in India apps.
