The Day of Dussehra: Victory of Good Over Evil

happy dussehraDussehra is a major Hindu festival, celebrated in India every year during September or October. It is the festival of good over evil and is celebrated throughout the nation and even some places in foreign lands. It is the day which is also called as Vijaya Dashami, Dasara or Dashain.

What people do?

Many people on this day pray and visit temples where goddess Durga’s idol is placed for worshipping. They come in group wearing new clothes and enjoy food offerings to the god at home or in temples. This is the day when people immerse the idols of Goddess Durga whom they bring during Navratri festival. After 9-day Navratri, the tenth day is celebrated as Dussehra or Vijaya Dashmi. This is done throughout the nation where people feed goddess, pray and worship. Also seen in many places are outdoor fairs or ‘mela’ in Hindi. Effigies are burnt on this day on bonfires after sunset. So, Dussehra is the culmination of the Navratri festival.

It is a ten-day celebration where local events are held for the entertainment of people. Performances are held and people come to attend the festival from various places together. It is a big festival that brings people together to spend some quality time with their dear ones.

Public life

In this day, Government offices, banks and post offices remain closed in India. Some stores, businesses and organizations also remain closed or stay opened for few hours. Those who wish to use public transport on this day should contact the local transport authorities for checking the timetables.


Dussehra is celebrated for the victory of Hindu god Ram over the demon king Ravan. It is the triumph symbol of good over evil. It is the mythical story that involves Lord Rama, his wife Sita whom he saves from the evil Ravana, the demon king of Lanka.
