Ganesh Chaturthi Will Be Celebrated on 29th August

As we all celebrate our birthday every year, the Hindu Gods also love the concept of birthday celebrations. Ganesh Chaturthi marks the birthday or birth anniversary of Lord Ganesha. It is an annual event that falls either around the final half of August or in the beginning of September. This year, the Ganesh Chaturthi will be celebrated on the 29th of August.

On the auspicious day of Ganesh Chaturthi, the devotees of Lord Ganesha worship him elaborately and seek his blessings. Lord Ganesha loves eating and mostly prefers eating Modak, a sweet dish prepared from rice powder, coconut, sugar etc. Ganesha, according to Hindu mythology, is the god of good fortune, wisdom and prosperity. These are things every human being wants to have; so, the number of Ganesha devotees around the globe is pretty high. The day is celebrated in almost all parts of India and also in foreign lands with big Indian population, but the celebrations are biggest in the Indian states of Maharashtra and Gujarat, particularly Maharashtra.

Earlier we have discussed about the usually timing of Ganesh Chaturthi as per the English calendar. The date keeps on varying every year as the timing is picked according to the Hindu calendar. As per the Hindu calendar, Lord Ganesha was born on the Shukla Paksha day of the month of Bhadrapada.

Ganeshotsav or the festivity that surrounds the auspicious occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi lasts for ten days; it continues till the day of Anant Chaturdashi, a day that most people call Ganesh Visarjan. On the day of Ganesh Visarjan, devotees take the idol (usually made from clay) of Lord Ganesha to a water body (it can be a river, or a sea or an ocean) making a gala procession and immerse it into it (the water body).
